LifeRing Two

Hi to all,

I have just spent the last hour on LifeRing and I found it fantastic. I joined a conversation with four people and it really has helped my confidence to be able to talk to people.

I explained to them that I was not fast at typing and the response was just to take my time as there is no rush.

Most of the chat was really light hearted and the people were open and honest about their addictions.

I don’t go to AA as I found it did not help me, but to be able to talk to another person live with the same problems as myself was really great.

I dont know if this would work or not, but I have been toying with the idea of perhaps trying to get something like Skype for people in recovery who really need to talk to someone face to face. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work as it would be a free service and perhaps run by volunteers.

If anyone has any ideas on how I could possibly make it work or getting it started then please let me know.

I just hope people dont think it’s a stupid idea because, as I am now disabled, it would be a great chance for me to give something back to others in need. As I have had more than my fair share of help in the past.

I’m really trying hard to build my confidence without a drink, and finding it really hard, but the chat on LifeRing did me some good I think.

Love to all and write back soon.

Derek xx

Hi Derek,

Like you I think technology is going to have a greater and greater role in recovery. We all need to communicate but circumstances (disability, other commitments, lack of confidence etc.) can make groups hard for some people. It’s taking time but I think it will get there.

I think your idea is great – why don’t you try doing something locally?

Hi Michaela,
Thanks for your reply and I am glad you think it is a good idea.
I think I will take your advice and start locally and I also think I will contact all the oil companies in aberdeen to see if they would back such a scheme, after all there are many oil workers that end up in a bad way with the drink and drugs as I did. I also think I will get in touch with some of my old contacts from being in the North sea for many years. I just need to pluck up the courage and also put some kind of plan together.
Thanks again love Derek xx

Bloody brilliant idea Derek – do let me know how you get on, and if I can help in any way at all please do let me know.

Sounds great… there are also other on-line meetings. At SMART Recovery we have been running Sunday night meetings for over a year using a chat system. It uses voice as well as text so head-set is ideal.

Our US colleagues have a very active schedule of on-line meetings so there is something every day of the week.

Drop us a line if interested or having any difficulties logging in..
